The Origin Story of DJ King Vee

Born and raised in the small township of Virginia in the Free State, DJ King Vee’s journey into music is as raw and honest as the soil of the mining town he calls home.

Rooted in the heart of a community often overlooked by South Africa’s entertainment spotlight, King Vee emerged as one of the most determined voices of the new wave of rural-born artists who refuse to be boxed in by geography or circumstance.

Growing up in a modest household, music was never just background noise it was a survival mechanism. Like many township youths, Vee was raised on a sonic diet of kwaito, house, and gospel played at local taverns, churches, and shebeens. But what set him apart was his sharp ear and relentless curiosity about the craft behind the decks. He started DJing at the age of 14 using borrowed equipment at school functions and community events. By the time he reached matric, his name had already started circulating in local WhatsApp groups and around township street bashes.

King Vee’s sets soon became known not just for their high-energy blends of amapiano, Afro-tech, and gqom, but for how they told a story. His transitions felt personal, laced with nostalgic Free State soul and futuristic vision. He wasn’t just mixing tracks he was mixing identities, bridging the rural and urban, the old and new.

What truly propelled his rise, though, was his hustle. Without major-label backing or a big-city co-sign, King Vee relied on the community. He sold merchandise out of his car boot, printed his own flyers, and shot music videos with friends using mobile phones. His viral amapiano remixes on TikTok and Facebook made him a household name in the province, eventually landing him slots alongside bigger names on regional lineups like Macufe, Bloemfontein Sundays, and Free State Kota Festival.
